Cleaning the Band
Clean the inside of the band daily using rubbing alcohol. Many parents find that 70–90% alcohol works well. Using a soft toothbrush to gently scrub the inside is often more effective than just spraying.
The outside of the band usually does not need strong cleaning. If needed, wipe it gently with water or a damp cloth. Avoid using concentrated alcohol on the outside if it has been sealed with Mod Podge, as alcohol can soften or damage the finish.
Reducing Odor
Odor is common with cranial bands. Different methods work for different families, but these tips are commonly helpful:
- Scrub the inside daily with rubbing alcohol, using a toothbrush.
- Allow the band to air dry fully before putting it back on.
- Make sure your child’s head is completely dry before reapplying the band.
- Place the band in direct sunlight during the daily off-hour, if recommended by your provider.
- Some parents use odor eliminators such as Fresh Wave.
If odor is persistent, consider splitting the daily hour off into two 30-minute sessions (morning and evening), cleaning the band during each session.
Always follow your medical provider’s instructions regarding wear time and cleaning.
